Chapter 2: HE CHOSE HIS MOTHER'S BIRTHDAY

My name is Phoebe Bennett.

And the night my son was born, I learned exactly how little my husband valued the woman carrying his child.

I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant when my water broke.

I had been standing in the kitchen, trying to decide whether I wanted toast or cereal, when a warm rush abruptly ran down my legs.

For three seconds, I just stared at the floor.

Then the pain came.

A contraction.

Deep.

Tight.

Impossible to ignore.

I grabbed the counter.

“Okay,” I whispered.

“Okay, little man.

I think you're ready.”

My husband, Rowan, was already dressed for dinner.

He stood in front of the mirror straightening his cufflinks.

His mother, Selina Bennett, was turning sixty that night.

The birthday dinner had been arranged for months.

When another contraction hit, I leaned forward.

“Rowan.”

He didn't turn around.

“I'm listening.”

“My water broke.”

He paused.

Then he looked at me through the mirror.

“What?”

“My water broke.”

He turned.

For a moment, I expected panic.

Concern.

Anything that resembled the reaction of a husband whose pregnant wife had just gone into labor.

Instead, he glanced at the clock.

“Phoebe, are you sure?”

I almost laughed.

“No, Rowan.

I just enjoy standing in a puddle.”

He frowned.

“Don't be sarcastic.”

Another contraction hit.

I grabbed the edge of the counter.

“Call the hospital.”

“You can call.”

“Rowan.”

He picked up his phone.

I thought he was going to help.

Instead, he checked the time.

“Mom's dinner starts in forty minutes.”

I stared at him.

“Our son is coming.”

“I know.”

“So call the hospital.”

He sighed.

“Fine.”

He called.

The hospital told us to come immediately.

I grabbed my bag.

Rowan put on his coat.

For one stupid second, I thought he was coming with me.

Then he said, “I'll drive you.”

Relief washed over me.

Until his phone rang.

His mother's name appeared on the screen.

He answered.

“Hey, Mom.”

I heard her voice faintly.

“What?”

His expression changed.

“Now?”

He looked at me.

“I'll be there.”

I stared at him.

“Where are you going?”

“Mom needs me.”

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

“Rowan, I'm in labor.”

“She has sixty people coming tonight.”

“Our son is coming.”

“She'll understand.”

“No, she won't.”

He grabbed his keys.

I stepped in front of the door.

“You're not seriously leaving.”

He looked irritated.

“Phoebe, stop making this dramatic.”

“I'm scared.”

“You'll be fine.”

“Come with me.”

He shook his head.

“I can't miss Mom's birthday.”

I stared at the man I had married.

Then I heard Selina's voice through his phone.

“Tell her women have been giving birth forever.”

Rowan laughed.

“See?”

He looked at me.

“Handle it yourself.”

Then he walked out.

The door closed.

I stood there alone.

The contractions came closer together.

My hands were shaking as I called a rideshare.

But before I could finish, another name flashed on my phone.

A name I hadn't called properly in almost two years.

Dad.

I stared at it.

Then answered.

“Dad…”

His voice changed instantly.

“Phoebe?”

I tried to stay calm.

“I'm at the hospital.”

“Why?”

“My water broke.”

There was silence.

Then his voice became firm.

“Where are you?”

“St.

Vincent's.”

“I'll be there.”

Twenty-five minutes later, Gideon Sterling stepped through the maternity entrance.

The billionaire investor.

The man whose name appeared on financial magazines.

The man who had once been described as one of the most private billionaires in America.

He was dressed in an old gray coat.

No bodyguards.

No assistants.

No security detail.

Just my father.

He found me seated in a wheelchair.

He crouched beside me.

“I'm here.”

I began crying.

Not because I was afraid anymore.

Because for the first time that night, someone had chosen me.

Dad stayed through fourteen hours of labor.

At 4:17 a.m., my son was born.

Leo.

Healthy.

Loud.

Perfect.

Dad held him and cried.

“He's beautiful,” he whispered.

I smiled through tears.

“His father hasn't met him.”

Dad looked at me.

“Then his father doesn't know what he's missing.”

Three days later, Rowan eventually came home.

He stepped into the living room expecting an angry wife.

Instead, he saw my father sitting on the sofa.

Gideon Sterling.

Holding his newborn son.

Rowan stopped breathing.

“Phoebe…”

I looked up from my laptop.

“Welcome home.”

His face turned pale.

“Why is Gideon Sterling holding my son?”

Dad slowly lifted his eyes.

“Because you weren't here.”

Rowan stared.

Then he looked at me.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

I closed my laptop.

“You never asked.”

His eyes moved to the papers beside me.

One page showed money leaving our joint account.

Another showed a company I had never heard of.

And the third had one name printed across the top.

SELINA BENNETT.

Rowan's expression changed.

“What is that?”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“That's what I've been doing while you were celebrating your mother's birthday.”

I slid the first document toward him.

“Counting.”"
