Chapter 3: The Man at the Edge of the Yard

His name was Dennis.
He was her husband's brother.
And he had not spoken to their family in two years — not since the argument at her father-in-law's funeral, not since the door slammed and the car left and nobody called after it.
She had not invited him here.
She had not told him where they lived.
Her name was Claire.
And she stood in that yard with her daughter pressed against her back and looked at the man who should not have been standing twenty feet away, and she felt the ground shift under everything she thought she knew.
"Dennis."
He looked up slowly.
"Claire."
"Why are you here?"
He didn't answer right away.
His eyes moved to the woman — her name was Renee, her husband's cousin, the one who had always smiled too easily and stayed too long at family gatherings — and something passed between them.
Not words.
Just a look.
That look told Claire everything she needed to know about how long this had been going on.
"Someone needs to tell you the truth," Renee said from behind her.
Claire didn't turn around.
She kept her eyes on Dennis.
"Is that why you came?
To tell me the truth?"
He put his hands in his pockets.
"Claire—"
"My daughter was in a hole in the ground, Dennis."
His jaw tightened.
"I didn't know she was going to do that."
"But you knew she was going to be here."
Silence.
Maya tugged at Claire's sleeve.
Claire reached back and held her hand without looking down.
"How long?" Claire asked.
Dennis looked at the grass.
"How long have the two of you been meeting behind my back?"
"It's not what you think."
"Then tell me what it is.
Use your words.
Right now.
Because I am standing in my own yard and my child just spent God knows how long at the bottom of a pit while this woman stood over her and smiled, and you were here, and neither of you called me."
Renee stepped forward.
"We were trying to protect Maya."
Claire turned then.
Slowly.
"From me."
It wasn't a question.
Renee met her eyes without flinching.
"From a lie that's gone on long enough."
"What lie?"
"Ask your husband."
Claire's chest went cold.
"My husband is at work."
"Is he." Renee tilted her head.
"Are you sure about that?"
Maya's hand tightened around Claire's fingers.
Claire pulled out her phone.
She called.
It rang four times and went to voicemail.
She called again.
Same result.
She lowered the phone.
Dennis was watching her with something that looked almost like guilt.
Almost.
"Where is he?" Claire asked quietly.
Neither of them answered.
But Renee's eyes moved — just briefly — to the back gate.
The one that led to the old access road behind the property.
The one that had been unlocked when Claire arrived home, even though she was certain she had locked it that morning.
Claire looked at the gate.
Then back at Renee.
"He was here too."
May you like
Renee said nothing.
And that silence was the loudest answer Claire had ever heard.
