Chapter 2: She Said You're Not Real

Part 2 ⬇️
Her mother's hands were still shaking.
Maya pressed her face into her mother's neck and whispered four words.
"She said you're not real."
The air went still.
Her mother slowly turned back to face the woman.
"What did you tell her?"
The woman crossed her arms.
"Only the truth.
Someone had to."
"She is FOUR years old."
"Old enough to know where she belongs."
Her mother's voice dropped low.
"You put my child in a hole in the ground."
"I didn't push her." The woman shrugged.
"She fell.
I was watching to make sure she was fine."
"You were SMILING."
The woman said nothing.
But her eyes moved — just for a second — to something behind them.
Her mother turned.
A man was standing at the edge of the yard.
Someone she recognized.
Someone who should not have been there.
He looked at the woman.
Then at Maya.
Then at the ground.
He didn't say a word.
But Maya pointed at him and whispered again.
"He was here before you came too, Mommy."
Her mother felt something cold move through her chest.
This wasn't an accident.
This was planned.
And the woman standing in front of her wasn't acting alone.
