Chapter 7: Evan Makes His Move

The call came four days later.

Claire was at the kitchen table with Sophie, helping her glue sequins onto a paper crown — a replacement for the one that had been crushed at the wedding — when her phone rang.

It was a number she didn't recognize.

She answered it anyway.

"Claire." Evan's voice.

Careful.

Controlled.

The voice he used in meetings.

"Don't hang up."

Sophie looked up from the crown.

Claire touched her daughter's cheek and carried the phone to the hallway.

"You have thirty seconds," Claire said.

"I want to talk.

Just talk.

No lawyers, no—"

"Twenty-five seconds."

"I made a mistake." A pause.

"Several mistakes.

I know that.

But what Peter said at the wedding — the spreadsheet, all of that — he was exaggerating.

He was trying to save himself."

"Martin Gale has already spoken to the DA's office," Claire said.

"Whatever you're trying to do right now, it's too late."

Silence.

Then: "Ruth did that."

"Yes."

Another silence.

Longer.

When he spoke again, the careful control had slipped slightly.

"She reported her own son."

"She did."

"Claire, if this goes forward — if they actually file charges — it will destroy the family.

Everything Harold built.

The Foundation.

The name.

All of it."

"You should have thought about that before you put my daughter's name in a spreadsheet."

"I am asking you," Evan said, and now there was something new in his voice — not quite desperation, but close, the sound of a man who had always had a next move and was beginning to understand he didn't have one now — "to speak to Ruth.

Ask her to pull back.

Tell her you don't want to pursue it.

If you say that, she'll listen to you."

Claire leaned against the hallway wall.

"You want me to protect you," she said.

"I want to find a way through this that doesn't end with—"

"With consequences?"

"Claire—"

"Sophie asked me this morning why she doesn't have a daddy," Claire said.

"She's five.

I told her that some families look different from others and that ours is just the two of us and that's enough." She paused.

"She said okay and went back to her cereal.

She's five, Evan.

She recovered in ten seconds.

That's how little you meant to her in the end."

The line was quiet.

"Don't call me again," Claire said.

"If you need to communicate with me, do it through my lawyer.

Her name is Patricia Osei.

I'll have her contact your office."

"Claire, if you do this—"

"I'm already doing it."

She ended the call.

She stood in the hallway for a moment.

Through the kitchen doorway she could see Sophie pressing a gold sequin onto the paper crown with great concentration, her tongue between her teeth.

Claire's phone buzzed.

A text from the same number.

*You'll regret this.

I still have options you don't know about.*

She read it once.

Then she forwarded it to Patricia Osei with a single line: *He just threatened me.

Please add this to the file.*

Patricia replied in under two minutes.

*Already in.

Don't respond to him again.*

Claire put the phone in her pocket and went back to the kitchen.

"Mommy, does this one go here?" Sophie held up a silver sequin.

"Perfect spot," Claire said.

She sat down and picked up the glue.

"Let's do the whole edge."

May you like

Sophie beamed.

Claire's hands were steady.
