Chapter 2: Grandma Ruth Already Called Her Lawyer

The ring hit the floor and rolled under the cake table.

No one moved.

Then Peter laughed.

"You don't even know what you're holding," he said.

"That envelope has nothing to do with you."

Claire's hands were shaking.

She looked down at Sophie, who was clutching the torn paper against her chest.

"Sophie," Claire said quietly.

"Where did you get that?"

Sophie's voice was barely a whisper.

"Uncle Peter dropped it.

I picked it up.

I read the name on it, Mommy."

"What name?"

Sophie looked up at her with wet eyes.

"My name.

And Grandma Ruth's."

The room went cold.

Evan stepped forward and reached for the envelope.

"Give that to me.

Now."

Claire blocked him with her arm.

That was when the ballroom doors opened.

An older woman walked in slowly, leaning on a cane.

Grandma Ruth.

She looked at Peter.

Then at Evan.

Then at the torn envelope in Sophie's hands.

And she said four words that made Evan go pale.

"I already called my lawyer."
