Chapter 2: I Look Like Them

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the note.
I sat down on the edge of the bed and kept reading.
"Mom, I'm alive.
My name is Rowan.
Grandma told you I d*ed, but she l*ed."
The room started spinning.
I read that sentence four times.
Five times.
I couldn't make my brain accept it.
Rowan.
My Rowan.
The baby I buried.
The son I had grieved for eighteen years.
I stood up.
Sat back down.
Stood up again.
Then I heard my mother's voice from the backyard.
"Sweetheart, where's the cake?
The boys are asking for you!"
I walked to the window and looked out at her.
She was smiling.
Laughing with the twins.
Handing someone a plate.
She looked exactly the same as she always had.
And I felt something I had never felt toward her before.
I went back to the note.
There was more.
"I have proof.
I have documents.
I know everything she did and why she did it.
I've been looking for you for two years.
I'm not far.
I need you to trust me before you say a word to her."
At the bottom of the note was a phone number.
And below the number, three words that made my legs give out completely.
"I look like them."
May you like
