Chapter 1: The Box on the Porch

One of my triplet sons suddenly d*ed shortly after birth — then, on their 18th birthday, I found a gift box on my doorstep labeled "Happy birthday, brothers."

My husband and I had dreamed of becoming parents for a long time.

And after five years of treatment, it finally happened.

Later, during an ultrasound, we found out we were expecting triplets.

My husband and I felt like the happiest people in the world.

Two of the boys were born healthy, but the third, Rowan, had to stay in the NICU much longer.

I was extremely worried about him, but eventually, it seemed like Rowan was out of danger, and we were finally able to bring him home.

I was unbelievably happy to be the mother of three sons.

But not for long.

A few months later, Rowan got sick.

We called an ambulance and rushed him to the hospital.

Then the doctor came out and told us that our baby hadn't survived.

I felt like the ground had disappeared beneath my feet.

My mom stayed with us at the hospital and helped me with everything.

She took care of the twins and helped me arrange the funeral.

Because I barely had the strength to do anything at all.

I was just trying to keep going.

And now 18 years have passed.

That pain will never completely go away, but I'm incredibly grateful to have my boys.

Yesterday was the twins' eighteenth birthday.

The boys invited their friends over and had a barbecue in our backyard.

I stepped into the kitchen to bring the cake outside when suddenly there was a knock at the door.

I opened it, and...

no one was there.

There was a small gift box sitting on the porch.

Written across the top in black marker were the words:

"Happy birthday, brothers."

My bl00d ran cold.

I carried the box into my bedroom.

I assumed someone was playing a cruel joke.

But something inside me told me I had to open that box.

So I did.

There was a note lying on top.

It was slightly crumpled and handwritten.

It said:

"Mom, please don't show this to anyone until you finish reading it.

Don't trust Grandma.

You won't believe what happened 18 years ago."

The moment I read the second line, I felt all the air leave my lungs.
