Chapter 6: What Lily Knew

Lily Chen was waiting in the lobby of St.
Catherine's when Rachel arrived.
She was still in her scrubs.
She had the look of someone who had not slept and had spent the sleepless hours deciding whether to say something or stay quiet, and had finally chosen to say it because the alternative felt worse.
"I wasn't sure you'd come," Lily said.
"You saved my number," Rachel said.
"I saved yours."
They found an empty family consultation room off the main corridor.
Rachel closed the door.
Lily sat on the edge of a chair and folded her hands in her lap.
"Tell me about Dennis," Rachel said.
Lily took a breath.
"Three days before the Northshore shipment arrived, Dennis called me into his office.
He said there was going to be a new equipment delivery and that the receiving process was going to be streamlined.
He said the vendor had already been pre-cleared at the director level and that any flags from supply control were to be held and reviewed by him personally before any action was taken."
Rachel kept her face neutral.
"He said *any flags from supply control.*"
"Yes."
"Meaning me."
"You were the only person in supply control who would have caught it." Lily's voice was steady but her hands weren't.
"I didn't understand what he was doing at the time.
I thought it was just Dennis being Dennis.
Protecting his territory.
Making sure he was the one who looked good if anything needed resolving."
"But then the shipment arrived and I flagged it anyway."
"You didn't go through him." Lily looked at her.
"You called biomedical engineering yourself.
You went directly to the bay.
Dennis couldn't intercept it."
"And after Emma was stabilized.
After Daniel Moretti arrived."
Lily nodded.
"Dennis came to find me.
He asked me what you had said to Mr.
Moretti's people.
He asked if you had taken any documents with you." She paused.
"I told him I didn't know.
But I did know.
I watched you pick up those printouts."
Rachel was quiet for a moment.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
Lily looked at the closed door, then back at Rachel.
"Because yesterday a man came to the hospital asking questions about the Northshore shipment.
He said he was from a regulatory compliance firm.
He had credentials.
He spoke to Dennis for forty minutes in Dennis's office." She swallowed.
"When he left, Dennis came out and told the department that any questions about the shipment were to be directed to legal.
And then he looked at me and said — very quietly — *this is above everyone's pay grade, including yours.*"
Rachel thought about the name Frank had written down.
Veltris Capital Group.
"Lily, I need you to write down everything you just told me.
Dates, times, what Dennis said word for word.
Everything."
"Will it help?"
"It will confirm that the suppression of the flag was deliberate and coordinated.
That it wasn't just one person acting alone inside Daniel's company." Rachel leaned forward slightly.
"It connects the hospital side to the freight side.
That matters."
Lily pulled out her phone.
"I already wrote most of it down," she said.
"Last night.
I wasn't sure I was going to send it but I wrote it down."
She turned the screen toward Rachel.
The notes went back further than three days before the shipment.
They went back two months.
Dennis Cole had been receiving calendar invitations from a corporate email address Rachel didn't recognize.
The domain was registered to a consulting firm.
Lily had looked it up the night before.
The consulting firm's registered agent was Veltris Capital Group.
Rachel stared at the screen.
"How did you find this?"
"Dennis left his calendar open on the shared department system last month.
I saw a meeting listed as *NES logistics coordination* and I thought it was a hospital committee I hadn't heard about." Lily's voice was very quiet.
"I wrote down the email address because I was going to ask him about it.
Then the shipment arrived and everything happened so fast and I didn't."
Rachel sat back.
Two months.
Veltris had been coordinating with Dennis Cole two months before the shipment arrived.
Before Emma's accident.
Before Rachel had ever heard the name Moretti.
"Send me everything," Rachel said.
"Right now."
Lily's phone made a soft sound as the notes transferred.
Rachel's phone buzzed in her hand.
She looked at the screen.
It was a message from Daniel: *Frank's attorney just arrived.
Frank is asking to make a deal.
He says he has documentation on Veltris that goes beyond the freight contracts.
He says it involves the hospital board.*
Rachel read it twice.
Then she stood up, and Lily stood up with her, and Rachel looked at the younger woman for a moment.
"You could have stayed quiet," Rachel said.
"So could you," Lily said.
"With the shipment.
You could have let Dennis handle it."
Rachel thought about the gurney coming around the corner.
The Northshore box on the staging cart.
The twenty-year-old woman under the gray blanket.
"No," she said.
May you like
"I really couldn't."
She was already dialing Daniel before she reached the corridor.
