Chapter 2: What She Found in the Trash

Vanessa didn't answer.

She grabbed her purse and turned toward the exit.

"Vanessa." My voice came out harder than I intended.

"Stop walking."

She stopped.

But she didn't turn around.

The cashier pretended to study the register.

The family behind us went completely still.

I looked at Nia.

"What did your mom leave for you?"

Nia's hands were shaking.

"A box.

She gave it to you before she passed.

Letters, her ring, some photos.

She told me about it.

She said it was mine when I was old enough."

I remembered the box.

A small wooden one with a brass latch.

I had put it in the closet after the funeral and never touched it again.

"That box is still in the house," I said slowly.

Nia shook her head.

"No, Dad.

It's not."

I turned to Vanessa.

She finally faced me.

Her expression had shifted — not guilty, not sorry.

Just cold.

"I don't know what she's talking about," Vanessa said.

"She's twelve," I said quietly.

"And she knows exactly what she's talking about."

Nia reached into her backpack and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Her fingers trembled as she held it out to me.

"I found this in the trash," she whispered.

"It's Mom's handwriting."

My hands went numb as I unfolded it.
