Chapter 1: The Shoes She Wasn't Allowed to Have

My wife refused to buy my 12-year-old daughter cheap shoes while showering her own kids with luxury.
When I confronted her, my daughter exposed a shocking family secret.
The department store was packed with families preparing for school.
My wife, Vanessa, stood near the cashier surrounded by expensive shopping bags.
Her children had stacks of brand-name clothes and new shoes.
My twelve-year-old daughter, Nia, stood behind them holding only a plain backpack and a cheap pair of canvas sneakers.
Her current shoes were completely falling apart.
The rubber sole was peeling off, and the side seam was split wide open.
Before Nia could place the new shoebox on the counter, Vanessa snatched it out of her hands.
"You don't need new shoes," Vanessa said coldly.
Nia's voice trembled.
"My shoes are falling apart."
Vanessa didn't even glance at her.
"Then put some glue on them."
My young son tried to speak up.
"Mom, you bought me two pairs."
"Stay out of it," Vanessa snapped.
That was when I stepped up to the register.
I looked at the mountain of bags for Vanessa's children, then at Nia's empty hands.
"Why doesn't Nia have anything?" I asked.
Vanessa handed my platinum card to the cashier without looking at me.
"She didn't need much."
Then Nia looked down, shifting her foot behind her leg to hide her broken shoe.
"Nia?" I asked softly.
She swallowed hard.
"She said your card was only for her children."
A heavy silence fell over the store.
I turned slowly to Vanessa.
"Nia is my daughter."
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Marcus, please.
Not in front of everyone."
"You made it public when you mistreated her in front of strangers," I said.
I picked up the shoebox Vanessa had rejected and handed it to my daughter.
"Take them."
Nia didn't reach for the box.
Tears began streaming down her face.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
Nia's lips trembled as she looked at me.
"Dad...
this isn't just about shoes."
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward, her voice sharp.
"Nia, stop!"
The harsh command made my daughter flinch.
"Tell me," I urged softly.
Nia wiped a tear and finally spoke.
"Ask Vanessa what happened to the things Mom left for me."
I froze in place.
Vanessa's face went completely pale.
"What things?" I asked.
