Chapter 2: The Man With the Black Bag

Mason finally spoke.
"You weren't supposed to be here."
I looked at him.
"But I am."
Sienna moved toward the kitchen.
I watched her hand reach for her phone on the counter.
I got there first.
On the screen was a message thread.
The last message read: *"Is it done yet?"*
I looked at Sienna.
"Who sent this?"
She said nothing.
I scrolled up.
The messages went back three weeks.
Dates.
Times.
My schedule.
Every late night I worked.
Every trip I took.
Someone had been feeding this person my exact movements.
My son was still holding my neck.
I could feel him shaking.
I asked him quietly, "Did Mommy have people come to the house when Daddy was away?"
He nodded.
"More than Mason?"
He nodded again.
Then he whispered: "The man with the black bag came twice."
Sienna's face changed completely.
Mason took one step toward me.
"You need to calm down and let us explain—"
"Explain what?" I said.
"Explain why my son knows a man with a black bag?
Explain who you've been reporting my schedule to for three weeks?"
Neither of them answered.
Then my phone rang.
I looked at the screen.
It was my brother.

What my brother said next made everything stop.
