Chapter 2: She Came Back for the Wrong Reason

She was holding a letter.
Not just any letter — it was from a law firm, addressed to me, marked **CONFIDENTIAL**.
My stomach dropped.
"Where did you get that?"
"It came in the mail yesterday.
Your mother forwarded it to my parents' address." Her voice was shaking.
"Why is a lawyer writing to you about an inheritance?
And why didn't you tell me?"
I opened my mouth, but she wasn't finished.
"How much are we talking about, exactly?"
And there it was.
Not concern.
Not confusion.
Not even anger on my behalf.
Just the number.
She wanted the number.
"Sienna—"
"Don't." She stepped closer.
"Don't you dare say it's complicated.
Just tell me what you're getting."
I looked at her — really looked at her — standing in the doorway of the home I'd paid for, furious that I might have money she didn't know about.
Three days ago she'd walked out because I lost my job.
Now she was back because she thought I had something to gain.
I took a slow breath.
"You left me, Sienna."
"That's not what this is about."
"Then what is it about?"
She stared at me, jaw tight, and said nothing.
That silence told me everything I needed to know.
