Chapter 2: Before the Ambulance Arrived

Part 2 ⬇️
Richard came running.
He stopped in the doorway, saw what I was holding, and the color drained from his face.
It was a police report.
Dated the same night as my accident.
And my name was on it.
"What is this?" My voice was shaking.
"Richard, why do you have this?"
He didn't answer.
He just stared at the papers in my hands like a man watching something he'd buried finally crawl back to the surface.
"Was there someone else in that car with me?"
Still nothing.
"Richard.
Answer me."
"You weren't supposed to find that." His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Why do you have a police report about my accident?
You were my nurse.
You weren't even there that night."
He sat down slowly on the edge of the bed.
His hands were clasped together so tightly his knuckles had gone white.
"I was there," he said.
"I was there before the ambulance arrived."
The room felt like it tilted.
"What do you mean you were there?"
He looked up at me then.
And what I saw in his eyes wasn't guilt exactly.
It was something older than that.
Something he had been carrying since the night we met.
"There's something I never told the police," he said quietly.
"Something I never told anyone."
He reached out toward the report still trembling in my hands.
"And it involves the other driver."
