Chapter 1: The Thing in His Pocket

My wedding night felt perfect until my new husband whispered, "If you knew what I really did, you wouldn't be wearing that ring" — the next morning, I found something in his tuxedo pocket that made me scream.
I met Richard in the hospital after a terrible car accident.
When I woke up, my left leg was in a cast, and there were stitches in my forehead.
The doctors gently explained that parts of that night might never come back to me.
Richard was one of the nurses on my floor.
He wasn't supposed to become important to me, but somehow, he did.
He always paid me a little too much attention.
Sometimes, I caught him watching me from the doorway, almost like he was waiting for me to remember something.
It should have felt strange.
Instead, I kept telling myself there was a simpler explanation.
He liked me.
And if I was being honest, I was starting to like him too.
A few months after I was discharged from the hospital, Richard proposed.
I said yes.
Our wedding was everything I had dreamed of.
Almost.
Because Richard was acting strangely.
At dinner, his hand shook so badly that wine spilled over the rim of his glass.
Later, while everyone danced, I found him alone on the terrace, staring into the dark.
He was drunk and barely able to stand.
"What's wrong with you tonight?" I asked.
There was no smile on his face.
"If you knew what I really did," he whispered, "you wouldn't be wearing that ring."
I froze.
"Richard…"
"I should have told you before we got married.
I was selfish.
I thought if I waited long enough, maybe it wouldn't matter anymore."
Before I could ask another question, he sank to the floor.
Between exhaustion and champagne, he was asleep within minutes.
But when we reached the bedroom, I barely closed my eyes.
His words kept turning through my head until dawn.
I tried to convince myself that he was just drunk and didn't know what he was saying.
The next morning, while Richard was still asleep, I began gathering our clothes from the floor.
His tuxedo jacket was hanging over a chair.
When I picked it up, something heavy shifted inside the inner pocket.
At first, I thought it was our marriage certificate.
Then I pulled it out.
My fingers went numb.
"No…" I whispered.
There was something inside that pocket Richard should never have had.
Realizing what he had really been hiding from me, I screamed.

What was inside that pocket — and what did Richard really do?
