Chapter 2: The Letters That Never Arrived

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

"I think you know my son."

The room went silent.

Liam's hand was shaking as he reached for the microphone.

William stepped back but didn't let go.

"Who is she?" Ashley asked again, louder this time.

The woman looked at Ashley with something close to sadness.

"I'm the woman who raised the man your father told you was d*ad."

Ashley turned to Liam.

"Dad.

What is she talking about?"

Liam's face had gone completely white.

"She's confused.

She doesn't know what she's saying."

But the woman reached into her coat and pulled out an envelope.

"I have letters, Ashley.

Thirty-one years of letters your grandfather sent to my son — and your father returned every single one unopened."

My legs felt weak.

I didn't know about any letters.

I didn't even know who this woman's son was.

But Liam did.

Because when she said the name written on the front of that envelope, Ashley covered her mouth.

And I finally understood why Mom had whispered to me before I left that morning.

*"Watch Liam.

He's been hiding something since before you were born."*

---

What's in that envelope — and who is the man Liam has been hiding for thirty years?
