Chapter 1: The Empty Wheelchair

My wealthy brother banned mom from his daughter's wedding because of her wheelchair — then the groom took the microphone.
My brother Liam spent nearly $90,000 on his daughter Ashley's wedding.
Luxury hotel.
Hundreds of roses.
A string quartet.
But three days before the ceremony, he called me.
"Don't bring Mom."
I thought I'd misheard him.
Our mother was seventy-nine and used a wheelchair after a bad fall.
"She's Ashley's grandmother."
Liam sighed.
"The venue has stairs.
It'll make things complicated."
I knew that was an excuse.
He didn't want a wheelchair in his perfect wedding photos.
Mom pretended she wasn't hurt when I told her.
"Go.
Ashley shouldn't lose you too."
So I went alone.
The ceremony was beautiful, but Mom's absence was impossible to ignore.
Then, during the reception, Ashley's new husband, William, suddenly stepped up to the microphone.
"Before we continue, there's someone missing."
Liam immediately stood.
"William.
Not now."
William ignored him.
"I was told Ashley's grandmother was too sick to attend."
My stomach tightened.
That was a lie.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
A woman in her seventies walked in, pushing a wheelchair.
My mother's empty wheelchair.
Liam's champagne glass slipped from his hand.
Ashley stared at her father.
"Dad...
who is this woman?"
But before he could answer, the stranger pointed directly at me.
I froze.
"Do I know you?"
Then she said the one thing that made Liam grab the microphone from William's hand.
