Chapter 2: What Guilt Looks Like on a Man's Face

I read the note twice.
Then I looked at David.
His face had gone completely still.
"David." My voice was barely a whisper.
"What is she talking about?"
He didn't answer.
He just stared at the box.
I reached inside and pulled out the first thing my hands found — a thick manila envelope, sealed, with my name written on it in Chloe's handwriting.
Inside were photographs.
My hands started shaking before I even understood what I was looking at.
David and a woman I didn't recognize.
A restaurant I'd never been to.
Dates written on the back of each photo — dates from the year before we got married.
And then a letter.
Not addressed to me.
Addressed to Chloe.
Written by her father.
I looked up at David.
He finally met my eyes — and what I saw there wasn't confusion.
It was guilt.
"How long have you known she had these?" I asked.
He said nothing.
"David.
How long?"
He sat down slowly, like his legs had given out.
"She wasn't supposed to send those," he said quietly.
"She promised me she never would."
There was still more in the box.
Much more.
And I suddenly wasn't sure I wanted to keep looking.
