Chapter 1: The Box That Broke Twelve Years of Silence

My stepdaughter returned every birthday gift I sent her for 12 years — in the 13th year, I stopped sending them, and then a huge box from her arrived at my door, and what I found inside made me go pale.

When I married David, his daughter Chloe was seventeen.

Her mother had passed away a few years earlier, and although I never tried to replace her, Chloe was clearly not happy about having me there.

I knew becoming her stepmother wouldn't be easy, but I swear, I tried.

I did everything I could to spend time with her.

I cooked her favorite meals.

I never interfered in her personal life, but I was always ready to offer advice if she needed it.

But she constantly pushed me away.

Then, a few months later, she went off to college in another state, about a ten-hour drive from us, and stopped coming home.

I tried everything I could to stay in touch with Chloe, but she wouldn't even answer my calls.

When I asked David to talk to Chloe and explain that I'd love for her to come visit us, he told me he'd already spoken to her about it.

He said they'd had a terrible argument.

"She said she can't stand having you in this house," he explained.

"She thinks I chose you over her."

I was devastated.

Still, every year on her birthday, I sent her a gift.

Nothing extravagant.

At eighteen, a necklace.

At twenty-one, a leather bag.

At twenty-five, a cookbook because I remembered how much she used to love baking.

And so, for 12 years, I sent her birthday gifts.

Every single package was returned to sender.

Not even opened.

Eventually, David told me to stop.

And in the 13th year, I bought another gift, wrapped it, and sat there staring at it for nearly an hour.

In the end, I just couldn't keep doing this anymore.

I had to respect how she felt about me.

So that year, I sent nothing.

Three days later, a delivery truck pulled up in front of our house.

The driver unloaded a huge cardboard box with my name on it.

I had no idea what it was.

David and the delivery driver had to carry it into the living room together because it was so heavy.

The box was from Chloe.

I was stunned.

Why would she send me anything?

Twelve years of silence, and then this.

David and I opened it together.

On top was a note addressed to me.

"Maybe Dad will finally tell you himself why I left home.

It was never about you, Alice.

Look inside, and you'll understand everything."
