Chapter 2: What He Said When Tyler Left the Room
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
The water was still running over my frozen hands.
"What do you mean?" I finally managed.
Richard didn't blink.
"Tyler is talented.
More than he knows.
And I've been making sure the right people notice that."
"What right people?"
He reached into his jacket and placed a business card on the counter beside me.
A name.
A company.
An address in the city.
"I own a contracting firm," he said.
"We're expanding.
I've been watching Tyler for months.
The way he works, the way he thinks.
I want to bring him in as a junior partner."
I stared at the card.
"Then why didn't you just say that?" I asked.
"Why all the secrecy?"
Richard's expression didn't soften.
"Because Tyler doesn't believe in himself yet.
And the moment a mother gets involved, a young man stops taking risks."
Something in his voice made me go still.
"There's one condition," he added.
He picked up the card, held it for a moment, then set it back down.
"Tyler can never know I spoke to you first."
Before I could answer, we both heard footsteps coming back down the hallway.
Richard straightened up, and just like that, the warmth returned to his face as if the last two minutes had never happened.
