Chapter 1: The Man Who Kept Appearing

My son started spending all his free time with his 50-year-old coworker — I invited the man to dinner; he suddenly told me, "There's time for you to know what I really want from your son."
My husband walked out when Tyler was only six.
From that day forward, it was just the two of us.
I knew I could never fill the place his father had left empty, but I did everything possible to make sure Tyler never doubted how deeply he was loved.
After graduation, he landed his first full-time job at a neighborhood hardware store.
Within weeks, the same name began appearing in nearly every conversation.
Richard.
His 50-year-old coworker.
"He's not like everyone else, Mom," Tyler told me one evening.
"He listens to me.
When I talk, he makes me feel like my opinion actually matters."
At first, I was relieved.
Tyler had finally found an older man he trusted and admired.
But before long, Richard seemed to take over his entire life.
He invited Tyler to his house almost every weekend.
Whenever I suggested we have dinner together or watch a movie, Tyler already had plans with him.
I tried to convince myself that my son had simply found the father figure he had always missed.
But the closer they became, the harder it was to ignore the uneasy feeling in my stomach.
Richard wasn't a relative or an old family friend.
He was a 50-year-old man who had suddenly become intensely interested in my young son.
Maybe I was being overprotective, but I couldn't pretend their enormous age difference meant nothing.
Then, one Sunday, Tyler came to me.
"Mom, I want you to really get to know Richard.
Can I invite him over for dinner?"
I agreed because I loved Tyler.
But secretly, I needed to look this man in the eye and decide for myself whether my son was safe around him.
Richard arrived at six carrying a bottle of wine.
He was warm, respectful, and effortlessly charming.
After dinner, Tyler suddenly remembered something he wanted to show Richard and disappeared down the hallway.
I gathered the plates and carried them into the kitchen.
A moment later, Richard followed me.
He stood behind me and glanced toward the hallway to make sure Tyler was gone.
When he turned back to me, every trace of warmth had left his face.
"It's time you learned what I really want from your son," he said quietly.
My hands froze over the sink.
Richard stared directly into my eyes before adding:
"You didn't honestly believe I'd done all of this for no reason, did you?"
