Chapter 2: Our Proud Boy

Part 2 — continued below.

Inside the box were photographs.

Not many.

Maybe a dozen.

But Leo picked up the first one and didn't put it down.

It was a young man — maybe nineteen or twenty — in a graduation cap and gown, grinning at the camera like he'd just won something.

"Who is this?" Leo asked.

"That's your Uncle Daniel."

He looked up at me.

"You never talk about him."

"No," I said.

"I don't."

Leo turned the photo over.

There was a date on the back, and three words written in my mother's handwriting: *Our proud boy.*

He reached for the next photo.

I let him.

Daniel at a birthday party.

Daniel at the beach.

Daniel in a kitchen somewhere, laughing with his mouth full.

Then Leo got to the last one and went very still.

It was Daniel in a hospital bed.

Thin.

Tired.

Still smiling, but different.

"What happened to him?" Leo asked quietly.

I looked at my son across that table and said, "He had Down syndrome.

And he spent his whole life being laughed at by people who thought they were better than him."

Leo set the photo down carefully.

"He d*ed when he was twenty-six," I said.

"And I have never once stopped missing him."

The kitchen was completely silent.

Then Leo's phone buzzed on the table between us — and when he saw the name on the screen, his face went white.

What that message said — and what Leo did next — broke me in a way I wasn't prepared for.
