Chapter 1: The Boy I Didn't Recognize

My son laughed at our waiter with Down Syndrome during dinner — I didn't make a scene and drove him home in silence, already knowing exactly how I'd teach him a lesson he'd never forget.
My 14-year-old brought home a report card worth celebrating, so I took him to the steakhouse he'd been asking about since spring.
Everything was fine until our waiter stepped over.
Sam looked to be in his early twenties.
He was polite, careful, and had Down syndrome.
He held the pad with both hands and read our drink order back to us line by line to make sure he'd gotten it right.
Leo started smirking before Sam finished writing.
I pressed my foot against his leg under the table and gave him a look.
He went on looking straight past me.
Sam got partway through the daily specials and stumbled on one of them.
He paused, and started the word over, slower.
Leo rolled his eyes.
Then he pulled his shoulders forward and tipped his head the way Sam holds his — and held it.
He picked up his phone and started texting his friend with that same smile still on his face.
Sam finished the specials.
He thanked us and walked back toward the kitchen.
I sat there and looked at the boy across the table and could not find my son in him anywhere.
I placed my credit card down before Sam came back.
I apologized to him.
I left the biggest tip I have ever left in my life and asked for the check.
I didn't say one word to Leo in the parking lot.
He waited until we were on the road.
"Mom, come on.
I was just joking around.
Why are you making such a huge deal out of this?"
Twenty minutes home.
I didn't answer him once.
He went for the stairs the second we were through the door.
I told him to sit down at the kitchen table.
Then I went into my bedroom, reached into the back of my closet, and took down a faded wooden box I hadn't opened in almost twenty years.
I set it on the table between us and lifted the lid — His smile was gone before he'd finished looking inside.
