Chapter 2: The Phone on the Table

The room went completely still.

My husband set down his fork.

His face had gone pale.

My son kept his voice calm and steady — the way he always did when he had already decided something.

"I know about the arguments.

I know what you said about me, Dad.

I heard you, more times than you think.

Through walls.

Through closed doors.

Through the silence you thought I couldn't read."

My husband opened his mouth, but nothing came out.

"I also know," my son continued, "that you told Mom, more than once, that your life would have been better if I had never been born."

A sharp breath came from somewhere across the table.

My sister-in-law covered her mouth.

My mother looked down at her hands.

My husband finally found his voice.

"That is not — I never said it like that —"

"I have it recorded, Dad."

The whole table froze.

My son reached into the side pocket of his wheelchair and placed his phone on the table.

He didn't press play.

He just let it sit there.

"But that's not the secret I wanted to share today."

He looked at me then — only at me — and his eyes were full of something I had never seen before.

"Mom," he said quietly, "I think it's time they knew what you gave up for me."

My heart stopped.
