Chapter 1: The Boy Who Was Never Enough

My son had been unable to walk since early childhood.
My husband had dreamed of raising a boy who would play football, just like his own father once did, but life gave us a different child — a kind, brilliant, brave child who needed a wheelchair instead of cleats.
And my husband never forgave me for it.
For years, he blamed me in quiet comments, cruel jokes, and late-night arguments.
Whenever he saw other fathers playing sports with their sons, he would look at me as if I had personally taken that future away from him.
Then my son's 18th birthday arrived.
The whole family gathered to celebrate.
Everyone was smiling, eating cake, pretending we were a perfect family.
Suddenly, my son raised his glass and said he wanted to make a toast to his parents.
My husband had no idea what lesson he was about to receive.
A lesson he would carry for the rest of his life.
My son looked straight at us and began:
"So, the truth is, I know everything that has been happening in our family all these years.
But there is something you don't know about me."
