Chapter 2: They Were Never Mine

Inside the envelope was a single document.
A legal form.
Already signed by Vanessa.
It wasn't a transfer order.
It was a petition to have Caleb and Emma declared dependents of the state.
She wasn't stealing from my children.
She was trying to remove them entirely.
I looked up at her.
"What is this?"
She crossed her arms.
"You're never home.
You don't see what I deal with every day.
Those children are out of control."
"They're eight and five, Vanessa."
"And they're not mine." She said it without blinking.
"They were never mine."
My hands were shaking.
Then Caleb spoke from the doorway.
He had been standing there the whole time.
"Dad.
There's something else."
He walked to the kitchen drawer and pulled out a second envelope.
Smaller.
Older.
"I found this three weeks ago.
I didn't know what it meant."
I opened it.
It was a letter.
Addressed to Vanessa.
From a name I didn't recognize.
But the last line stopped me cold.
*"Once the children are gone, the full trust transfers to the surviving spouse."*
Vanessa's expression didn't change.
And that was the moment I understood.
This was never about the money.
It was about making sure no one stood between her and all of it.
