Chapter 2: The Papers on the Doorstep

Zoe arrived in exactly fourteen minutes.
Two black SUVs pulled up to the brownstone.
The doors opened and three people stepped out — two women I didn't recognize and a man in a dark coat carrying a leather bag.
Zoe walked straight to me, looked at Lily's cheek, and her jaw went tight.
"Inside?" she asked quietly.
"Still in there."
She nodded once.
Then she looked at the man with the bag.
"Daniel.
You're up."
I didn't ask what that meant.

The front door opened before they reached the steps.
Mark stood in the frame, his face shifting from surprise to something harder when he saw who was behind me.
"Chloe.

Mark's face went pale.
"It's Thanksgiving."
"It was," Zoe said.
Then Carol appeared behind Mark in the doorway, and her expression changed the moment she saw the papers in Daniel's hand.
"What is that?" she demanded.
"Mark, what is she doing?"

I had been planning this for a long time.
His hand started to shake.
"Chloe," he said.
"How long have you—"
"Long enough," I said.
Lily pressed her face against my neck.
And from inside the house, Megan's voice rang out sharp and sudden —
*"Mark.
Tell me that's not what I think it is."*
---
What was in those papers — and what did Megan already know?
What Chloe had been quietly preparing will leave you speechless.
