Chapter 2: Three Words Into a Phone

The pavilion went completely silent.
On the screen, Theresa's voice was calm.
Almost cheerful.
"Once Valerie is cut out of the estate paperwork permanently, there's nothing she can do.
She has no money, no lawyer, and no one who will believe her."
Rachel's face crumpled.
"Mom, turn it off—"
"She doesn't even know the will was changed," Theresa continued on the recording.
"I had Gerald handle it quietly.
Valerie thinks she's still in it."
I couldn't breathe.
I had known my mother was cold.
I had never known she was capable of this.
Logan set his wedding ring on the table in front of him.
He didn't throw it.
He didn't shout.
He simply placed it down and looked at Rachel the way you look at someone you are already finished with.
"How long?" he said quietly.
Rachel opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
The man in the charcoal suit was still frozen near the wedding party.
Someone nearby took a slow step away from him.
Then another person did the same.
I felt Chloe's hand find mine in the dark.
"I'm sorry, Mommy," she whispered.
"I didn't know it would be this big."
I pulled her close.
My hands were shaking.
Because what I had just heard wasn't only about Rachel's affair.
The will.
The estate paperwork.
Gerald.
I didn't know who Gerald was.
But Logan did.
I could see it in his face.
He picked up his phone and made one call.
Three words.
"Get here now."

What Valerie discovered about the will — and who Gerald really was — is worse than anything shown on that screen.
