Chapter 2: What She Stopped Herself From Saying

David walked in.
He didn't say a word.
He just looked at Rachel.
And Rachel stopped talking completely.
"Ready to go?" he said.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
Rachel nodded immediately.
"Yes.
Of course."
She didn't look at me.
She picked up her bag and walked straight past me toward the door.
I grabbed her arm.
"Rachel—"
"I'm fine," she said.
"Please don't."
David held the door open, watching us both.
I let her go.
On the drive home, I couldn't stop thinking about what she'd whispered.
*Almost two years.* No access.
No card.
No accounts.
The flowers.
The vacations.
The jewelry.
None of it was hers.
The next morning, Rachel texted me.
*Sorry about last night.
Ignore what I said.
Everything is fine.*
I stared at that message for a long time.
Then I called our mother.
"Mom, did you know Rachel doesn't have access to her own money?"
Silence.
Then, very quietly:
"How much did she tell you?"
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean, how much?
Mom — what do you know?"
She didn't answer right away.
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper.
"There's something you need to see.
Come to my house.
Don't tell Rachel."
