Chapter 1: The Rules at the Table

My sister always said her husband treated her like a queen — then I watched him snatch her credit card at dinner.
For years, my sister Rachel insisted she'd married the perfect man.
"David treats me like a queen," she'd always say.
And honestly, I believed her.
Expensive vacations.
Flowers every Friday.
Beautiful jewelry on every anniversary.
Then we went out for Rachel's birthday.
There were eight of us at the table when she quietly told the waiter:
"Dessert is on me."
She reached into her purse and pulled out her credit card.
David's hand immediately shot across the table.
He snatched it from her.
"No."
Rachel froze.
"It's my birthday, David.
I can buy dessert."
He leaned closer.
"You know the rules."
The entire table went quiet.
Rachel's face turned red.
Then, without another word, she put her purse away.
I stared at her.
"What rules?"
"Nothing," she said quickly.
David smiled.
"Rachel isn't very responsible with money."
Something about the way she lowered her eyes made my stomach drop.
Later, while David was outside taking a call, I followed Rachel into the restroom.
"What's going on?"
She forced a laugh.
"He's just careful with our finances."
"Rachel, he took your card."
Her expression suddenly changed.
She checked the restroom stalls before whispering:
"It's not really my card."
"What?"
"I haven't had access to our accounts in almost two years."
Before I could respond, the restroom door opened.
