"How dare you send me THIS?" Katherine screamed.
I stayed calm.
"Open it," I said.
"Read every single page."
Inside the box was a detailed invoice — every Saturday Amelia had worked, every hour, every task.
Feeding the kids.
Reading to them.
Cleaning the kitchen.
Tidying their rooms.
Eight Saturdays.
Forty-six hours total.
$552 owed.
At the bottom, I had added a note:
*"Payment is now overdue.
If this amount is not settled within 7 days, I will be filing a formal complaint with the labor board and sharing this invoice with every family member."*
Katherine went silent for a moment.
Then she laughed — cold and sharp.
"You wouldn't dare.
Clark would never let you embarrass me like this."
"Clark knows," I said quietly.
"He signed the note."
Another silence.
Then her voice dropped low.
"You have no idea what you just started."
She hung up.
I thought that was the end of it.
But two hours later, Amelia came home from school — and her face was pale.
"Mom," she whispered.
"Katherine called me directly.
She said if you send that invoice to the family…
she's going to tell everyone something about Dad."
My hands went cold.
