Chapter 2: The Box at the Back of the Closet

Part 2 ⬇️
I walked out of that restaurant without looking back.
Graham caught up with me on the sidewalk, his face pale.
"I'm sorry," he said.
"She had no right—"
"Who is Anna?" I asked.
He stopped walking.
Just stopped.
Like the name had turned him to stone.
"Graham.
Who is Anna?"
He looked away.
"She was…
someone I knew before you."
"Someone you knew." I stared at him.
"Rachel just screamed that name in a packed restaurant.
In front of strangers.
Like I was a replacement.
Like I took something that wasn't mine."
He didn't answer.
When we got home, I went to the bedroom to change.
That's when I noticed it — a small cardboard box pushed to the back of the closet shelf.
I'd never seen it before.
I pulled it down.
Inside was a photo.
A woman I didn't recognize, laughing, standing in front of a house.
Our house.
The one we were supposedly saving for.
On the back, in Graham's handwriting: *Anna — the day we signed.*
My hands went cold.
I walked back into the living room.
Graham was sitting on the couch, head in his hands.
"Graham," I said quietly.
"When exactly did Anna leave?"
He looked up — and the expression on his face told me the answer was going to change everything.
