My husband, Graham, and I have been married for two years.

His older sister, Rachel, has never hidden the fact that she dislikes me.

She constantly makes passive-aggressive comments about my background and our lifestyle, but I usually just bite my tongue to keep the peace.

Last night, Rachel invited us to dinner at a high-end downtown steakhouse.

Graham agreed, but he explicitly told her beforehand that we were saving for a house and were on a strict budget.

When the waiter came over to take our orders, Graham and I both asked for the standard chicken entree and tap water.

Rachel didn't even glance at her menu.

She immediately ordered a $150 dry-aged wagyu ribeye, a side of lobster mac and cheese, and multiple glasses of imported wine.

"It's been a long week," Rachel said casually.

"I definitely need to treat myself."

Graham shifted uncomfortably in his seat but didn't say a word.

We ate in relative silence.

When we finished, the waiter returned to our table and pulled a black leather folder from his apron.

Before he could even set it down, Rachel pointed directly at Graham.

"He's got it," she said smoothly, reaching into her purse for her lipstick.

"Put it all on his card."

Graham looked down at the table, completely defeated, and slowly reached into his pocket.

I didn't argue, and I didn't start a fight.

I just pulled out my own credit card, handed it to the waiter, and looked right at Rachel.

"Just the two chicken entrees, please," I said evenly.

"She will be paying for her own meal."

Rachel stared at me, her jaw dropping.

"Are you kidding me?!" she screamed, turning to glare at Graham in front of the entire dining room.

"Why did you replace Anna with her?!"

I didn't flinch.

I just picked up my purse, stood up from the table, and did exactly what she didn't expect.
