Chapter 2: The Woman Who Drove Four Hours

Part 2 ⬇️
The woman who sat down beside Lauren was her own mother.
Lauren's face didn't just go pale.
Her hands gripped the edge of the table.
She opened her mouth, then closed it again.
Her mother looked at her and said, very quietly:
"Lauren.
What is this about?"
Lauren forced a smile.
"Mom, I — I had no idea you were coming."
"I know you didn't," her mother said.
"That's why I'm here."
I had called her two days earlier.
I explained everything.
The $5,000.
The six months.
The broken refrigerator.
The socks comment.
There was a long silence on the phone before she spoke.
"She told me she borrowed that money from a friend.
She never said it was your mother."
She drove four hours to be at that table.
Lauren looked at me.
Then at her mother.
Then back at me.
"This is a setup," she said.
"No," I said.
"This is dinner."
Lauren's mother opened her purse and placed an envelope on the table.
"I raised you better than this," she said.
"And I'm ashamed of what I'm hearing."
Lauren's eyes dropped to the envelope.
Her mother slid it toward my mom.
But that wasn't even the part that made Lauren's hands start shaking.
It was what her mother said next.
---
What Lauren's mother revealed at that table left everyone speechless — including Lauren.
