Chapter 1: The Towels Under the Refrigerator

My SIL borrowed $5,000 from my 70-year-old mom and refused to pay it back because "she's retired and has nothing to spend it on" — so I taught her a lesson she'd never forget.

My mom is 70.

She's never had much money, but she still managed to save about $5,000 for emergencies.

One Saturday, I stopped by her house and noticed that her refrigerator had finally broken down completely.

Even the light inside no longer worked.

It was leaking, and my mom kept placing towels underneath it.

It barely kept anything cold anymore.

It needed to be replaced immediately, so I offered to drive her to the store and help her pick out a new refrigerator.

Mom looked down and said:

"Honey, I don't have any money right now."

I looked at her in surprise and asked:

"Mom, what about your savings?

The money you kept for emergencies?"

Mom replied:

"I lent all of it to Lauren.

She came to me and begged me for money to repair her car.

She promised she'd pay me back."

Lauren is my brother's wife.

The thing is, she'd never really had much of a relationship with my mom or shown much interest in her, but the moment she needed something, Mom was the first person she turned to.

My mom is very kind and soft-spoken, and she has a hard time saying no to people.

Lauren knew that.

Lauren is also incredibly irresponsible with money.

She can spend thousands of dollars on a new designer dress while failing to pay for basic things like insurance.

Almost six months earlier, she'd damaged her SUV in a minor accident.

She only had liability coverage, so her own insurance didn't cover the damage to her SUV.

So it was pretty obvious what the money had been for.

I immediately called Lauren and asked when she planned to pay my mom back since it had already been six months.

She just laughed and said:

"Oh, I needed that money more than your mom did!"

I tried to stay calm.

"When exactly are you planning to pay my mom back?

That was her emergency savings!

She needs to buy a new refrigerator now."

Lauren just sighed and said:

"Why does your mom even need that much money?

She's retired.

She sits at home and doesn't do anything.

What does she even spend money on?

Socks?"

Lauren had borrowed my mom's money and clearly had no intention of paying it back.

And on top of that, she was speaking to me as if I were the one doing something wrong.

I'd had enough.

Lauren needed to learn a lesson and understand that my mom deserved to be treated with respect.

So I smiled and said:

"You're right.

Actually, I'd like to invite you to a family dinner I'm hosting tomorrow."

The next evening, Lauren stepped into my house and sat down at the table with a smile.

Then the special guest I'd invited just for Lauren sat down beside her.

The moment Lauren saw her, she went as pale as a ghost.

And I smiled so sweetly, no cake could've been sweeter.

Who do you think was sitting at that table — and why did Lauren go pale the moment she saw her?
