Chapter 2: The Figure at the Door

Rachel's words hung in the air like smoke.

Twin sister.

I stood there holding Lily's hand while two hundred people sat in complete silence behind me.

"Where is Claire?" I asked again.

Rachel's chin trembled.

"She didn't want to do this.

I want you to know that."

"Do what?

Where is she?"

"She asked me to come instead." Her voice dropped.

"She said she couldn't go through with it."

Something cold moved through my chest.

"She couldn't go through with marrying me."

Rachel looked down at the floor.

"There's something she never told you, Mark.

Something she's been carrying for a long time."

I turned toward Claire's mother.

She had both hands pressed flat against her stomach, like she was trying to hold herself together.

"You knew," I said.

"You sat in that pew and watched this happen."

"Mark, please—"

"You looked me in the eye this morning.

You hugged Lily."

Her face crumpled.

"She made me promise."

"She made you promise to let her sister marry me instead."

No answer.

Lily tugged my sleeve.

"Daddy."

I looked down.

She was pointing at the small side door near the altar.

It was open just a crack.

And on the other side, barely visible in the narrow gap of light, was a figure in a dark coat.

Standing completely still.

Watching.
