Chapter 1: The Wrong Bride

My seven-year-old daughter started crying three seconds before I was supposed to become a married man.

I was standing at the altar with a gold wedding ring between my fingers when Lily suddenly ran toward us and pulled back my bride's veil.

Then she looked at the woman I was about to marry and whispered, "Daddy, wait.

Something's wrong."

Every person inside St.

Andrew's Chapel went silent.

"Lily!" I said.

"What are you doing?"

She turned toward me, and whatever irritation I felt disappeared the moment I saw her face.

Tears were already streaming down her cheeks.

She wasn't throwing a tantrum.

She was terrified.

"Daddy, please," she said, her voice trembling.

"Don't put the ring on yet."

My bride, Claire, stood perfectly still beneath the veil Lily had pulled aside.

Claire was thirty-two, blonde, elegant, and normally impossible to rattle.

But for one brief second, something strange crossed her face.

Then she smiled.

"Mark, she's just confused," she said gently.

Lily shook her head so hard that strands of her light brown-blonde hair stuck to her wet cheeks.

"No."

I crouched beside her.

"Tell me what's wrong."

She stared at Claire instead of answering me.

Her eyes moved slowly over Claire's face.

Then they stopped at Claire's left ear.

Lily raised one trembling finger.

"There."

Claire's smile tightened.

"What do you mean, sweetheart?"

Lily swallowed.

"Yesterday, this looked different."

And then Claire made the mistake that changed everything.

Her hand immediately flew to her left ear.

It happened so quickly that I almost missed it.

Almost.

I slowly lowered the wedding ring.

"Why did you cover your ear?"

Claire blinked.

"I didn't."

"Yes, you did."

"Mark, please.

We have two hundred guests watching us."

I looked toward Lily.

She grabbed my hand with both of hers.

"Daddy, please believe me."

Those four words hit harder than her accusation.

She wasn't asking me to calm her down.

She was asking me to trust her.

"What looked different?" I asked.

Lily touched the upper curve of her own left ear.

"The little cut."

My stomach tightened.

I suddenly remembered it.

Claire had a tiny V-shaped notch in the upper rim of her left ear.

Months earlier, she had told me she caught it on a broken screen door when she was eight.

It was almost invisible unless you knew where to look.

But Lily knew.

"Claire," I said quietly.

"Move your hand."

Her face lost color.

"Mark, don't do this."

"Move your hand."

She hesitated.

Then she slowly lowered it.

I stepped closer.

There was no notch.

No indentation.

Nothing.

For several seconds, my mind refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

The blonde hair was right.

The blue-gray eyes were right.

The wedding gown was right.

Even her voice sounded almost right.

But suddenly I was noticing things I had ignored at the altar.

Her chin seemed slightly narrower.

The tiny freckle beneath Claire's right jaw was missing.

And when she became frightened, her voice didn't have the faint rasp I knew so well.

I stared at the woman wearing my fiancée's wedding dress.

"Who are you?"

Someone in the first pew gasped.

She didn't answer.

Instead, she glanced toward the chapel exit.

Lily immediately pressed herself against my side.

"Daddy, that isn't Claire."

The woman whispered, "Mark, please."

"Where is Claire?"

Claire's mother suddenly rose from the front pew.

"Mark, we should discuss this privately."

I turned toward her.

She wasn't confused.

She looked terrified.

That frightened me more than anything Lily had said.

"How long have you known?" I asked.

Her mouth opened, but no answer came.

I put the wedding ring into my pocket and faced the officiant.

"Stop the ceremony."

The woman at the altar stared at me as her carefully controlled smile finally disappeared.

I took Lily's hand and walked toward the side door, but before I reached it, the woman called my name.

I turned around.

She removed the veil completely.

"My name isn't Claire," she whispered.

"It's Rachel."

Then she said the sentence that made Lily stop crying and made my entire relationship with Claire feel like a lie.

"Claire is my twin sister."

Where is the real Claire — and why did her own mother say nothing?
