Chapter 2: What the Photo Couldn't Say

Part 2 ⬇️

I stood on that doorstep, my legs barely holding me up.

"Proof of what?" I said.

"What are you talking about?"

He wouldn't look at me.

Then Tina appeared behind him.

She didn't say a word.

She just held up her phone — and on the screen was a photo I hadn't seen in over thirty years.

My chest went tight.

"Where did you get that?" I whispered.

"It doesn't matter where I got it," she said.

Her voice was calm.

That was almost worse than if she'd been screaming.

"What matters is that you never told him."

My son turned to me then, and the look in his eyes was something I'd never seen before.

Not anger.

Grief.

"Is it true?" he asked.

"Did you know who my father really was — and you lied to me my whole life?"

My mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Because the answer was complicated.

And the part I hadn't told him — the part I'd spent thirty years trying to protect him from — was so much worse than whatever Tina thought she'd found.

"Let me explain," I said.

"Please.

Just let me explain."

He started to close the door.

"I think you've had thirty years to explain, Mom."
