Chapter 2: The Envelope Under the Door

I opened the door and looked at her calmly.

Madison's mascara was running down her face.

Her whole body was shaking.

She could barely get the words out.

"Take it back.

Please.

Just take it back."

I folded my hands and said, "I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean."

"You know exactly what you did!" she screamed.

"My whole porch — it's everywhere — I can't even open my door!"

I tilted my head.

"Oh.

You mean the mess?"

She went completely still.

I smiled.

"Funny how that feels, isn't it?"

Her face twisted.

For a moment I thought she would slam my door.

Instead, she started crying again — not angry crying.

Something closer to shame.

Then her phone rang.

She looked at the screen and her face went white.

"I have to go," she whispered.

"Madison." My voice stopped her at the bottom of the steps.

"That call — is it your landlord?"

She spun around.

"How do you know about my landlord?"

I said nothing.

She stared at me for a long moment, then turned and ran.

I watched her go and thought about the envelope I had slipped under her door before placing my husband's gift on the porch.

The one with her landlord's name and number on it.

And the photographs inside.

What was in that envelope — and what did Madison's landlord already know?
