Chapter 1: The Garden My Husband Left Me

My neighbor turned my porch into her personal dumpster — so I prepared one tiny gift for her that changed her life forever.

I'm 72, and my garden is my pride.

My late husband planted our pear tree the year we bought the house.

Every spring, we planted new flowers together.

I had the most beautiful garden in the neighborhood.

Until my new neighbor, Madison, moved in next door.

Two days later, I found cigarette butts in my geraniums.

Then came wine bottles on my porch, takeout boxes under my pear tree, and finally, garbage bags beside my front steps.

I kept cleaning until one bag split open in the heat and rotten food spilled across my walkway.

So I knocked on her door.

"Madison, please stop leaving trash on my property."

She laughed.

"Oh, please.

You old women always think the whole neighborhood belongs to you."

"I only want you to use your own bins."

Her smile vanished.

"Stop bothering me before I give you something real to complain about."

The next morning, I understood exactly what she had meant.

My yard looked like a garbage truck had exploded.

Banana peels hung from my roses.

Greasy plates covered the grass.

Spoiled food had been dumped around my pear tree.

Madison watched me clear the mess off my porch with a smug smile and said, "I warned you.

You won't even call the police because nobody's going to come out over something this stupid."

Oh, sweetheart, I wasn't planning to call the police.

I had something far better in mind.

Leaving the mess where it was, I went up to my attic and found exactly what I was looking for.

My husband had kept it for situations just like this.

I placed it on Madison's porch, rang the bell, and went home.

Five minutes later, someone pounded on my door.

Madison stood there sobbing, her hands trembling.

"How dare you do this to me?

How?

Please, make it stop!"
