Chapter 1: The Neighbor Who Helped Herself

My neighbor treated our pool like it was her own, inviting her friends over whenever we weren't home — I didn't call the police, but the next time they showed up, I taught them a lesson they weren't expecting.

When my husband and I bought our house three years ago, the backyard pool quickly became our family's favorite place.

We spent summer weekends there with our kids and sometimes invited neighbors over.

That's how we became friendly with Eloise.

At first, she was perfectly polite, so I never expected her to take advantage of our kindness.

One afternoon, I came home early and heard voices in our backyard.

When I stepped outside, I found Eloise relaxing by our pool with several people I'd never seen before.

"Oh, you weren't home," she said when I confronted her.

"I didn't think you'd mind."

I made it clear that she couldn't use our pool without permission.

Eloise apologized and promised it wouldn't happen again.

A few weeks later, we left town for seven days to visit my family.

That first afternoon, my phone alerted me to movement outside.

I checked the cameras and saw Eloise leading several people through our side gate.

I immediately called her and told her to leave, but instead of apologizing, she sounded annoyed.

"You're hundreds of miles away.

The pool is sitting there empty, so why should I need your permission?"

They left, but two days later, Eloise was back, and before the week was over, she'd done it again.

Each time, they left behind empty cups, food wrappers, wet towels, and furniture out of place.

No matter how often we called, she acted like we were the ones being unreasonable.

My husband wanted to call the police, but by then, I had another idea.

When we returned, I didn't confront Eloise again.

I simply made a few preparations and waited.

Three days later, my camera alert went off.

Eloise was back — but this time, she had no idea what was waiting for her.

What did she prepare?

And what happened when Eloise walked in?
