Chapter 2: What the Whole Street Heard

Part 2 — Comment Continuation

---

I had spent those hours doing something Monica would never forget.

I gathered every broken twig, every stripped branch, every piece of evidence from my yard.

Then I carried it all to her front lawn and arranged it carefully around a handwritten sign.

It read:

*"This woman st\*al the last harvest my husband ever planted.

His name was Daniel.

He d\*ed twelve days ago.

These were his trees."*

Beside the sign, I placed Daniel's wooden ladder — the one she had used to climb over and take everything.

I didn't shout.

I didn't knock on her door.

I just waited.

When Monica stepped outside and saw it, the color dr@ined from her face.

"You have no right—" she started.

"I have every right," I said.

"You used his ladder.

You took food from his children.

And now the whole street knows."

Neighbors had already stopped on the pavement.

Some were reading the sign.

One woman put her hand over her mouth.

Then Ben appeared beside me, still holding his father's old cap.

Monica looked at him.

For one second, something crossed her face.

But then her expression hardened.

"You'll regret this, Claire," she said quietly.

"You have no idea what I know about your husband."

The street went silent.

My heart stopped.
