Chapter 2: Eighty-Six Reasons

Part 2 ⬇️

I saw it before he said a word.

Every single can — all eighty-six of them — arranged along his front fence in a perfect line.

Each one had a small paper tag tied to it with string.

The tags read: *Property of Greg.

Returned with care.*

His guests were reading them.

Some were laughing.

Some were not.

Greg's face had gone a deep, ugly red.

"You made me look like an idiot in front of my family."

"You threw them," I said.

"I just gave them back."

His wife, Carol, stepped forward.

She looked at the fence, then at me, then at Greg.

"You've been throwing trash into her yard?"

"It was one can—"

"Eighty-six," I said.

Carol went very quiet.

Greg turned back to me, voice low.

"You think this is funny?

You have no idea who you're dealing with."

I smiled.

"I think your guests do now."

That's when his daughter walked over.

The one whose engagement party this was.

She looked at the tags.

She looked at her father.

She didn't say anything.

But the way she looked at him said everything.

Greg opened his mouth — and then his phone rang.

He checked the screen and froze.
