Chapter 1: The Woman Who Waited

My neighbor kept throwing soda cans into my flower beds and called me "too sensitive" — so I collected every one.
It started with one empty soda can in my roses.
I assumed the wind had blown it there.
Then another appeared.
And another.
Within two weeks, I realized they were coming from my neighbor Greg's yard.
One afternoon, I actually watched him finish a soda, crush the can, and toss it over our hedge.
"Greg!"
He looked over.
"Could you please stop throwing those into my flower beds?"
He laughed.
"It's a can, Linda.
You're too sensitive."
The next morning, there were two more.
So I stopped confronting him.
Instead, I started collecting them.
Every single one.
I rinsed them, dried them, and stacked them in boxes in my garage.
Twenty-three.
Forty-eight.
Eventually, eighty-six.
My husband thought I'd lost my mind.
"What are you going to do with all those?"
"Wait."
Three weeks later, Greg taped invitations to everyone's doors.
His daughter's engagement party.
Saturday.
Their backyard.
Nearly fifty guests.
Perfect.
That morning, I carried every box outside.
But I didn't dump the cans back into his yard.
I had a better idea.
By four, music was playing next door.
Cars lined the street.
Then Greg stepped outside.
Seconds later, he started pounding on my front door.
"Linda!
What the hell did you do?"
I opened it calmly.
"Something wrong?"
He grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the sidewalk.
His guests had gathered around the front of his house, completely stunned.
