I opened the door and looked at Katherine.
She was shaking.
Her face was pale.
Her eyes were wild.
"You had no right!" she screamed.
"NO RIGHT!"
I stayed calm.
I crossed my arms and said:
"You poured concrete into my pool, Katherine.
A pool my husband built with his own hands before he passed.
Did you think there would be no consequences?"
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Her husband was standing behind her on the path.
He wouldn't look at me.
"You're going to fix this," I said.
"Every bit of it."
"We don't have to do anything!" she snapped back.
I smiled.
"Actually, you do."
What I'd sent over that evening was a legal notice — hand-delivered by a local attorney.
It outlined the full cost of restoring the pool, plus damages for destruction of private property.
Her husband's construction company name was on it.
His license number too.
But that wasn't what had broken her.
It was the second document attached behind it.
I watched her husband's face go gray when he saw it.
"Where did you get that?" he whispered.
Katherine spun around and stared at him.
"What is it?" she demanded.
"What does she have?"
He didn't answer.
And in that silence, I realized I had stumbled onto something much bigger than a pool.
