The room went completely silent.
Sophie kept that sweet smile on her face, but her eyes were locked on Kristen.
"I'd like to recognize the woman who actually raised Emma," Sophie said clearly into the microphone.
"The woman who drove her to every rehearsal, every dress fitting, every breakdown at two in the morning.
Mom β would you please stand up?"
The applause started before I was even on my feet.
Tom's face had gone pale.
Kristen had stopped smiling.
Sophie wasn't finished.
"And since we're celebrating people who showed up for Emma," she continued, "I think it's worth mentioning who didn't.
For a long time."
Tom pushed back his chair.
"Sophie.
That's enough."
"Is it?" she said, still calm, still smiling.
Emma had her hand pressed over her mouth.
Her new husband had reached over and taken her other hand.
Then Sophie reached into the small bag she'd left on her chair and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
"I found something last week that Emma doesn't know about yet," she said quietly.
"And I think today is exactly the right day to talk about it."
Tom stood up fully now.
His voice dropped low.
"Put that away."
But Sophie had already started to unfold it.
