Chapter 1: The Woman Who Showed Up

My name is Patricia, and my ex-husband, Tom, and I have managed a fairly civil co-parenting relationship since our divorce eight years ago, mostly for our daughter Emma's sake.

When Emma got engaged last year, Tom and I both agreed to keep things peaceful for her wedding day, no matter what tension existed between us privately.

What neither of us discussed beforehand was Tom bringing his new wife, Kristen, someone Emma had met exactly once, briefly, at a birthday dinner months earlier.

He stepped into the reception with Kristen on his arm, no warning text, no heads-up call, nothing.

Emma's face went tight the second she spotted them at the entrance, though she said nothing, determined not to let it ruin her day.

Kristen made herself very visible all evening, posing for photos meant for family only, correcting the seating chart with the wedding planner, even attempting to give a toast nobody had asked her to give.

I watched Emma's jaw tighten more with every passing hour, though she held her composure beautifully through dinner and the first dance.

Then our younger daughter, Sophie, nineteen years old and never one to stay quiet for long, stood up during the toasts, walked over, and picked up the microphone before anyone could stop her.

"Since we're apparently including everyone tonight," Sophie said, smiling sweetly at the head table, "I think there's someone else who deserves recognition too."

The entire room turned to look at her.

What did Sophie say next — and how did Tom and Kristen react?
