Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Table

Victoria's smile didn't even flicker.
She crossed her arms and said, "Grandpa, whatever it is, can it wait?
Daniel and I are in the middle of something."
Her grandfather didn't move.
He looked at her for a long moment, then looked at me.
"No," he said quietly.
"It can't."
He set a brown envelope on the table between us.
Victoria glanced at it, then back at him.
"What is that?"
"Three days," he said.
"You were gone for three days, Victoria.
Did you think no one would look for you?"
The color shifted in her face — just slightly.
The first crack I'd ever seen.
"I was with a friend," she said.
"I already told everyone that."
"You were in Scottsdale," he said.
"With Marcus Hale.
I have the hotel receipts."
The room went completely still.
Then Victoria did something I didn't expect.
She didn't deny it.
She laughed — that same laugh — and said, "So what, Grandpa?
What exactly are you going to do about it?"
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a second document.
Thicker.
Folded in thirds.
"I already did it," he said.
"Three days ago.
While you were gone."
He placed it on top of the envelope and slid it across the table.
Toward me.
