Chapter 1: The Man She Thought Had Nothing

My name is Daniel, and I married Victoria five years ago, back when I still believed love could bridge any gap, including the one between her wealthy family and my working-class background.

For the first year or two, things were good.

Then something shifted.

She started treating me like hired help rather than a husband, while I cooked every meal, handled all the cleaning, and managed our entire household on top of my own job.

She never let me forget where the real money in our marriage came from.

In front of our friends, she'd casually mention how "lucky" I was that her grandfather had connections, or joke about how I'd "married up" in every possible sense, laughing like it was harmless.

Eventually, she stopped hiding things entirely.

Other men's names on her phone.

Weekend trips she didn't bother explaining.

When I finally told her I wanted a divorce, she just laughed in my face and said I'd end up homeless without her family's money behind me.

Then, three weeks ago, she vanished for three straight days.

No calls, no texts, nobody in her family knowing where she was, including her own parents.

When she finally reappeared, she acted like absolutely nothing had happened, breezing past me into the kitchen.

I told her we needed to talk.

I told her again that I wanted the divorce.

She laughed again, that same dismissive laugh, and repeated that I'd be nothing without her.

Right then, the front door opened, and her grandfather stepped in unannounced.

"I have some very good news for you both," he said, glancing between us.

"Well — for one of you, anyway."
