Chapter 4: What Patricia Found

Patricia Hale's office was on the fourth floor of a building that smelled like carpet cleaner and old coffee.

She was already at her desk when I arrived, a woman in her early fifties with reading glasses pushed up on her forehead and a yellow legal pad covered in handwriting.

She stood, shook my hand, and pointed to the chair across from her.

"Show me the video first," she said.

"Before anything else."

I handed her my phone.

She watched it twice, the second time leaning closer to the screen.

When she set the phone down, she pulled the legal pad toward her.

"The wrist grab and the sl\*p are documented," she said.

"That's physical harm to a minor.

The fact that your husband witnessed it and did not intervene is relevant.

The fact that he then asked you to return and apologize is also relevant."

"Can we use it?"

"We can use all of it." She tapped the pad.

"What I want to talk to you about is Donna."

She opened a folder and slid a printed page across the desk.

It was a case filing index — a column of dates, reference numbers, and status codes.

"Donna Calloway has processed fourteen family court intake filings in the past two years," Patricia said.

"Three of them involved parties connected to the Calloway family by name or address." She pointed to two lines near the bottom.

"These two were expedited.

Standard processing takes four to six weeks.

These moved in nine days."

I looked at the dates.

"What were the cases?"

"One was a restraining order application that was quietly withdrawn before a hearing was scheduled.

The other was a custody modification request — also withdrawn." She looked at me over the top of her glasses.

"Both involving women who had recently separated from Calloway family members."

The room was very quiet.

"She's done this before," I said.

"It appears so." Patricia closed the folder.

"Which means if Wendy files anything this morning, Donna will be watching for it.

And if Donna touches your case, we will have grounds to challenge the entire proceeding on the basis of conflict of interest — and potentially refer her conduct to the court's ethics board."

"Will that stop them?"

"It will slow them down considerably.

And it will frighten them, which is sometimes more useful." She set her pen down.

"But I need to ask you something directly, Mrs.

Calloway.

Last night — the sl\*p, the shove.

Are you prepared for those to be used against you in a filing?"

"Yes."

"The video shows context.

It shows provocation.

It shows your husband's inaction.

But opposing counsel will frame it differently."

"I know."

"Good." She picked up her pen again.

"Then here is what we do today."

She walked me through it methodically — an emergency protective order for Fiona based on the documented physical harm, a formal letter to the court administrator flagging Donna's potential involvement, and a preservation notice to Kelly requiring her to retain the original video file without alteration.

I signed three documents before ten o'clock.

Walking out, I checked my phone.

Luca had sent two more messages.

The second one read: *Mom's attorney says you have until noon to come home voluntarily or this gets complicated.*

I showed it to Patricia in the doorway.

She read it, handed the phone back, and said, "That message just became exhibit A."

I stepped into the elevator.

The doors closed.

Noon.

Wendy had given me until noon.

It was 10:22.

I pressed the lobby button and thought about the paper crown still sitting on Rachel's nightstand.

Fiona had worn it through the whole banquet, right up until the moment her grandmother's hand came across her face.

She had not asked for it back this morning.

That was the thing that was going to carry me through whatever came next.

My phone rang as the elevator hit the ground floor.

Unknown number again — but this time, when I answered, the voice on the other end was not Patricia's.

It was Donna.

"Jessi," she said, smooth and unhurried.

"I think we should talk before this goes any further.

Just the two of us."
