Chapter 2: The Envelope at the Door

PART 2 ⬇️
My phone lit up at 11:47 p.m.
Jason.
Twelve missed calls.
Then a text: *"Mom is talking to her lawyer tonight.
You need to come back right now."*
I put the phone face-down on the nightstand and pulled Lily closer.
She had finally stopped shaking.
Her cheek was still swollen.
She smelled like antiseptic and the strawberry shampoo I had used to wash her hair before bed.
I was not going back.
At 6:14 a.m., someone knocked on my sister's door.
Not Jason.
Brooke.
She stood in the hallway in yesterday's clothes, her mascara tracked down both cheeks, holding a manila envelope.
"Mom wanted you to have this before you do something stupid," she said.
Inside was a letter from Diane's attorney.
I read the first paragraph twice.
Diane wasn't just threatening.
She had already filed — claiming I had @bused her at the party, that I was unstable, that Lily was unsafe in my care.
She had filed before I even reached the clinic.
My hands went still.
That meant she had planned this.
The party.
The camera angle on Brooke's livestream.
All of it.
I looked up at Brooke.
"How long has your mother been building this case against me?"
Brooke's eyes dropped to the floor.
That was my answer.

What Emily found inside that envelope was only the beginning.
